Day 158 : I see pink things

Predictable but I always struggle to resist a good sunset. Too often recently we've endured a bland white-out sky all day which then fizzles out into darker grey then black. When I see the sky strewn with pink, orange, yellow, red and purple streaks and tendrils, I reach for my camera in an almost Pavlovian dog response.

There is no doubt that despite not wearing rose coloured spectacles, the colour pink is just what I am drawn to. I think both me and my camera can see pink when it’s not there or what others might see as a whisper of a rosy hue I seem to see a more vibrant punchier version. This sky included!

Day 157 : Leica love

It always seem a little ironic to take a photograph of your camera apart from perhaps if you’re planning on selling it. But I am not ashamed to admit that I’m rather fond of mine, and have decided I need a portrait of my little Leica for my new cards. I'm purchasing some moo.com cards to promote my blog, for no real reason other than I’d like to. I have in the past made little laminated cards with my blog details inscribed therein but this is stepping it up to the next level and allows me to select some of my favourite photographs to showcase. I can't wait to see how they turn out!

Day 156 : fifty shades...

Tonight’s Social has a theme of best seller book covers. We’re back in Trafalgar Square, the home of my first ever Frui Photography Social. It’s my ideal sort of team - old friends, new friends and some newbies to initiate in the lore of a Social. I'd really hoped to arrive on time for once but an awful cyclist accident earlier has blocked all the surrounding roads so I've had to take rather a circumventive route. But I'm here, we have a group and then I realise they've gone and I don't know the plan. However they are waiting for the slow coach and they've decided to stick together and not divvy up the challenges. Tonight we've got Catch 22, the Bible, Lolita, Twilight, The Great Gatsby and Fifty Shades of Grey.

We haven't really got an idea, but it's a fine evening and I guess it will come to us within the allotted hour, or at least I hope it will. Firstly AL and P try some backlit preacher style shots for the Bible. I suddenly have an idea for Fifty Shades... DB, the sole male of our team is wearing a tie - perfect for my plan. I suggest he removes it and ties up AB, his wife's, wrists. We find a handy stone plinth and try some poses. This one seems the most evocative and shot in black and white conveys the vision I had.

Whilst I'm messing around with bondage, P has shot a perfect image for Lolita, a short woman wearing a little floppy skirt, white socks and strapped sandals. She's cavorting around Trafalgar Square with her daughter and P’s shot has her running out of the picture. A fabulous image!

The talented I has captured a beautiful, poignant image of a tender hand holding of AB and DB, for the Great Gatsby. We’re on a roll!

We’ve had a brainwave for Catch 22, we need to do some sort of perspective shot of someone trying to catch a 22, we’re peering at bus numbers, building numbers, rates of exchange in the post office window but nothing is really leaping out at us. In the meantime we need to think about Twilight.

I suggest we need to procure an apple. A shiny red one! P suggests we go to “that place where you can borrow apples”. It’s unclear what apple borrowing place she has in mind (the Apple store???) but I take the less interesting option and buy a suitable apple from a still open Prêt. There's still a proposal for me to borrow one until I remind those making such a suggestion that generally places don't ’lend food’. What's curious is when we were exactly here back earlier in the year, I purchased a banana from a Prêt to represent a Yellow Submarine in the Beatles’ song challenge. I start to wonder what fruit I will be seeking on my next visit here...a pineapple, a watermelon or merely a raspberry? Well that's for next time!

I pose for the wrists wrapped in bracelets, black painted nails, pale hands holding the apple in an almost heart shape. AL is fanning out my black silk dress as a backdrop, it must look very curious to any passersby. AB's shot is really great, and I didn't know I could pass so easily for a teenage, angst-ridden goth, hmmmm may have to rethink my look there!

AL captures an elegant abstract double exposure of a carved in stone number two which is a much better photograph than us trying to catch a tiny 22 from the admissions sign for the National Gallery.

On returning to the pub we devise a long shutter speed shot with a glass of red wine, another of rosé and a third wine glass of water. DB nails this for our water into wine inspiration for the Bible.

Team “Great Lens-pectations” take the top prize tonight, woo hoo, I’m not surprised as our group came up with some awesome images. And I'm delighted about my ’strong’ 9.5 out of 10 for “Fifty Shades of Grey”, I could almost bite my lip! Hopefully Mr. And Mrs. B will forgive our competitive spirit and return again. Isn't it good when a plan comes together?

Day 155 : locks of love

I haven't been to Shoreditch station before I was pleasantly surprised to see a new site for these love locks. I'm familiar with the Pont de l'Archevêché bridge in Paris and know there are other sites around Europe, but didn't realise the tradition had spread to London.

My understanding is that the idea is that couples protect their love by customising padlocks, affixing to a fence or bridge thus locking in their love. This fence is also adorned by heart shaped woven from coloured wool in the link fence.

I'm intrigued to know if the padlock near the front, attached I assume by Lucas and Jodie-Marie, has been worn by the weather or is supposed to depict a broken heart!

Day 154 : ladybird, ladybird fly away home

We have a little oasis round the back of our new building. It has a few benches, a fountain and a curious telly-tubby mound in the middle of it. The hillock thing is very odd, it seems too sloping to sit on, perhaps you could shimmy up the steep sides and sit cross-legged on the top. Needless to say the brief time we've been here I haven't seen anyone find some use for it. We sit on the more traditional benches to eat our sandwiches and a ladybird is sat by us.

When I little, we believed that ladybirds with these markings were poisonous, that only the ones with three spots on each wing were safe to be around. Now I know that it’s just a different species. But I think I still prefer the ones with less spots though, just in case!

Day 153 : a Richmond decisive moment

I was eager to catch the Great Gatsby in 3D ensconced in one of the comfy chairs of what was formerly the Richmond Filmhouse (I know it's changed its name, but I prefer the previous one). I only had one opportunity for the 3D experience left so Sunday afternoon, this was my destination. Afterwards I decided to relive a little slice of Gallic life from last weekend and opted for a delicious bistro supper.

I wasn't sure if I would finish my lovely meal before the sunset but as I made my way to a Richmond Bridge, the light was just perfect. I live in such a beautiful place and am reminded again each time I take the time to enjoy it.

I was lining up the shot with some of the sleeping boats tethered to their posts down one side, the lights of the riverside buildings on the right and a lone duck in the distance. The colours of the setting sun are really beautiful in the sky and reflected on the gently rippling Thames. Just when I think I have a lovely shot two men and a boat speed into the middle of my scene churning up the tranquil water in their wake and carving the blue arc that makes the image.

One of those “decisive moments” or lucky accidents, if you will, but definitely a better shot than the one I originally intended.

Day 152 : sparkly Twiggy!

I'm not sure how I missed this when I rushed into Wardour Street screening rooms for an eclectic little horror movie short last night, possibly because I was dashing through, cutting it a little fine as usual. After we were dazzled by the diminutive film, hobnobbed with the stars, collected our heart-shaped balloon and quaffed some Champagne we head off for the walk to Milk and Honey and more frivolity. Just as we’re leaving I espy the huge Twiggy made out of hundreds and thousands of Swarovski crystals by the front door. I'm in sparkly heaven!

This just had to be recorded but being so shiny and reflective it is causing a major problem trying to avoid just mirroring the scene beyond. I approach Twiggy from every angle to see how best to avoid too much disruption to the image. It kind of worked but with the benefit of hindsight I should have tried welding a polariser to diminish the glare as I do actually keep one in my handbag, well doesn't everyone?
